Discussions at the Day of Energy Research explored how Responsible AI can be applied in energy systems, raising questions around explainability and responsible data practices.
On 22 April 2026, researchers from universities and research institutions across Hamburg came together for the annual Day of Energy Research to discuss current developments and findings in energy-related research. The event brings together researchers from institutions including the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg), the Technical University of Hamburg (TUHH), the University of Hamburg, and the HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU), creating a space for interdisciplinary exchange on emerging topics in the energy domain.
This year, members of the R-AIMS project participated in the event to introduce the project and present ongoing research on Responsible AI in the energy domain through a research poster. Particular attention was given to AI-based load forecasting, explainable predictions to strengthen trust, model robustness against disruptions or manipulation, and more energy-efficient approaches to training, implementation, and storage of AI models.
The discussion sparked by the poster highlighted strong interest in concept of Responsible AI and what it means in practice for energy-related applications. Conversations covered a range of tropics, including the role of
language models, responsible data practices, copyright-related questions, and broader challenges surrounding trustworthy AI systems in critical infrastructures.
Beyond the project presentations, the event offered valuable opportunities to exchange ideas on many other exciting developments in energy research and to connect with researchers from across Hamburg´s scientific community. The discussions provided useful perspectives for the ongoing developments of R-AIMS research activities at the intersection of Responsible AI and energy systems.
