About R-AIMS

The R-AIMS research project explores how artificial intelligence (AI) can be integrated into applied research in a responsible, safe, and human-centred way. It is driven by the growing importance of AI across all academic disciplines at universities of applied sciences.

To fully leverage AI´s potential while maintaining a critical perspective, R-AIMS is grounded in a strong understanding of applied AI concepts and methodologies. The project places particular emphasis on:

  • Responsible AI – ensuring the ethical and accountable use of AI
  • Human-Centred AI – designing AI systems that serve and empower people
  • EU AI Regulation – aligning with current and emerging legal frameworks

Research Approach

R-AIMS connects applied computer science with three doctoral programmes: Computational Engineering and Applied Data Science (CEADS), Sustainable Technologies and Systems (STS), and Interdisciplinary Social and Health Research (ISGF), enabling responsible AI-driven, application-oriented research across engineering, sustainability, and social and health sciences.

The project aims to identify ways to integrate Responsible AI into the development, evaluation, and deployment of AI-based systems. To achieve this, R-AIMS develops:

  • Innovative methods for analysing risk and trust factors
  • Scientific foundations for safe, trustworthy, and socially accepted AI
  • Systematic investigations of risks in line with the AI Act

Responsible AI in Research and Teaching

R-AIMS also aims to establish Responsible AI as a permanent cross-cutting theme in research, teaching, and the development of early-career researchers. The research environment serves as:

  • A hub for interdisciplinary experimentation and collaborative research
  • A platform for research-based learning
  • An integral component of training programs that equip early-career researchers to work with AI-supported methods

The overall focus is on combining technological innovation with ethical, social, and regulatory considerations.

The Hamburg Research Academy supports early-career researchers through training programs, mentoring, and networking opportunities.

AIGrid is a collaborative network that connects emerging AI talent with experienced experts, fostering synergies and innovation in artificial intelligence.

The Hamburg Open Online University is a joint platform of Hamburg´s universities, providing open access to online courses and educational resources for the wider public.
