From trustworthy AI methods to interdisciplinary collaboration, the project creates a space to explore Responsible AI in research, education, and practice.
With the R-AIMS (Responsible Advanced Intelligent Methodologies and Skills Lab) research project, a new research hub dedicated to the responsible and low-risk integration of artificial intelligence (AI) is being launched at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. The focus is on how AI-based systems can be developed and deployed in a trustworthy, secure, and human-centred manner – particularly in sensitive societal areas such as health and energy. The project is funded with around €3.9 million over four years.
R-AIMS combines the research strength of applied computer science with interdisciplinary perspectives from sustainable engineering and the social and health sciences. Together, researchers are investigating how Responsible AI and Human-Centred AI can be integrated into the development and use of AI systems. The aim is to combine technical innovation with public trust whilst identifying and addressing risks at an early stage.
One of the project´s key focuses is on developing new methods for assessing risk and trust factors. The project focuses on fairness, transparency, explainability, security, and reliability in AI systems. At the same time, R-AIMS examines regulatory requirements – for example, in the context of the European AI Act – and develops a scientific foundation for the responsible, application-oriented use of AI.
The research lab is intended not only to be a venue for scientific collaboration but also to create a space for exchange, testing, and training. Plans include interdisciplinary research and testing projects, events such as hackathons and workshops. In a so-called AI Regulatory Sandbox, use cases can be tested in a protected and regulated environment to gain insight for future and the practical integration of responsible AI.
In addition, teaching and training programmes are being developed for use by students and PhD candidates at HAW Hamburg. The aim is to embed skills for the responsible use of AI in research, teaching, and qualification in the long term.
With the launch of R-AIMS, work is now beginning on establishing the research space and joint working structures. Over the coming months, initial activities, exchange programmes, and research projects will get underway, and we will be reporting on these regularly on this website.
